Ripercorrendo la storia della nostra famiglia siamo tornati a fare quello che facevamo oltre 50 anni fa: amare le automobili, venderle e correrci.
Mio nonno con la sua “normale” Topolino prese parte alla 1000 Miglia del 1953 e del 1954 oltre che alle competizioni organizzate nei circuiti cittadini, mettendo alla frusta quella povera FIAT che durante la settimana veniva usata come utilitaria! Sempre nel 1953 iniziò la fortunata era Volkswagen-Porsche.
La società dei Fratelli Rondinelli fu una delle prime concessionarie ufficiali nel territorio italiano a vendere ed offrire assistenza alla casa di Wolfsburg oltre che alla diretta discendente azienda di Stoccarda. Inizialmente il territorio da coprire si estendeva in tutta la Puglia, la Basilicata e la Calabria poi, con la graduale diffusione della rete Volkswagen in Italia, la concessionaria si concentrò sulle province di Taranto e Brindisi. La versatilità dei Maggiolini – e dei derivati pullmini “Bulli” – fu tale che Taranto divenne una delle province italiane con la maggiore diffusione di Volkswagen già dalla fine degli anni ’50. Anche le Porsche si vendevano con successo nel territorio grazie alla vicinanza della base Nato abitata per lo più da americani che apprezzavano moltissimo le sportive tedesche.
Affidabili e prestazionali, le 356 (con una SC del 1964 stradalissima uscita dalla concessionaria, mio nonno partecipò anche ad un’edizione della gara in salita di Monopoli) vennero sostituite dalla 911 e dalla 912, accolte anch’esse con successo. Tuttavia era la Volkswagen che doveva produrre i maggiori risultati e alla fine degli anni ’60 quest'azienda risentiva di un momento difficile: il Maggiolino non raggiungeva più i numeri di vendita degli anni precedenti e i nuovi modelli non decollavano.
Così, la decisione dei fratelli Rondinelli di cedere il mandato Volkswagen-Audi-Porsche ed acquisire quello dell’italiana Alfa Romeo, all’epoca sulla cresta dell’onda grazie alla Giulia, alla GT e alla GTA, solo per citare alcuni modelli. Terminata la partecipazione attiva dei due fondatori, mio nonno e suo fratello, l’attività lavorativa nel mondo dell’auto è proseguita dagli zii che hanno collaborato per lungo tempo in Autogerma (oggi Volkswagen Group Italia) ed in Porsche Italia.
Mio padre invece portò avanti soltanto l’attività ludico-agonistica correndo sin dagli anni ’70 con molte auto nei principali campionati italiani in pista; nel 1991 e nel 1995 ha vinto il titolo di Campione Italiano Velocità Autostoriche assieme al compagno di equipaggio Angelo Rossi su una Alfa Romeo Giulietta TI, mentre nel 2001 ha vinto il campionato italiano di endurance Touring Master Cup, su una Lotus Elise versione Trofeo. Poi sono arrivato io, cresciuto in mezzo alle macchine sin da piccolissimo, ho imparato ad apprezzarle, a conoscerle ed a correrci. Insieme a mio padre, nel 2017, 2018 e 2019 abbiamo conquistato il titolo di Campioni Italiani Velocità Autostoriche prima con una BMW M3 E30 poi con la nostra fidata 911 Carrera 2 Gruppo B (964).
Non solo Porsche, ma tutte le auto storiche e sportive sono diventate la mia passione: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Alpine-Renault, Bizzarrini, BMW, Lancia e Lotus sono alcune delle case automobilistiche che maggiormente apprezzo; oggetti unici da ricercare, restaurare, riportare a nuova vita. Ogni auto è una sfida, unica, con una storia da raccontare.
Ricominciare ad operare in questo settore è stato per me naturale, affiancando la passione per le auto e le competizioni, ai miei studi in Design Industriale: così è nata la nostra attività di consulenza nel mondo delle auto storiche e sportive, nel cuore della Motorvalley, a Bologna, patria delle più famose case automobilistiche al mondo, da Maserati, a Lamborghini, a Abarth, a OSCA. Il nome dell'attività,
“Gulf blue”, è un tributo alla nostra (ex!) amata 911 Carrera RS 2.7 - di colore “Gulf Blue” - rimasta nel nostro garage per 24 anni. Una compagna della passione mia e di mio padre con cui abbiamo corso, abbiamo viaggiato e ci siamo divertiti tantissimo. Tracing back our family's history we are doing what we did more than 50 years ago: loving cars, selling them and using them for racing.
In 1953 and 1954 my grandfather with his "ordinary" Fiat Topolino not only took part to 1000 Miglia as well as competitions organized on street circuits, putting the pressure on that poor Fiat that during the week was used as a ordinary car. 1953 was a successful time for Volkswagen and Porsche in Italy that finally had an importer, Autogerma: that year the “Fratelli Rondinelli" company (founded by my grandfather and his brother) became one of the first dealerships in Italy to sell and offer assistance to the Wolfsburg company as well as to their subsequent factory in Stuttgart. Initially, their territory was three regions: Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria; later, as the Volkswagen network in Italy developed, the dealership became focused on the two provinces of Taranto and Brindisi.
Since the late 50's, Taranto was one of the Italian provinces with the greatest sales of Volkswagen cars thanks to the versatility of the Beetle and the camper vans also nicknamed the "Bulli". As a consequence, the Porsche marque was sold successfully in the area, especially as near to Taranto was the large NATO base and the Americans greatly appreciated Germans sports cars.
The Porsche 356 was a very reliable high-performance car (my grandfather took part in the Monopoli uphill race driving one of them). This was then replaced by the 911 and the 912 models, both equally well received. However, expectations that Volkswagen would have great sales were not met because the end of '60s was a difficult time for them: the Beetle no longer reached the sales of previous years whilst new models did not enjoy the success that they expected.
For this reason the Rondinelli brothers decided to leave the German brand Volkswagen – Porsche, representing the Italian brand Alfa Romeo which was, at that time, very popular thanks to the Giulia GT and GTA, just to name some of the models. After the active participation of the two old founders ended, the family connection with the automotive world was continued by my uncles who worked for a long time in Autogerma (Volkswagen Group, Italy) and Porsche, Italy.
Since the 70's, my father carried on the tradition with recreational and competitive motorsport, racing many cars in the most important Italian track championships: in 1991 and 1995 he won the Italian historic cars championship with his team-mate Angelo Rossi with an Alfa Romeo Giulietta TI, while in 2001 he won the italian endurance championship Touring Master Cup, driving a Lotus Elise Trophy.
Then it came to my turn. Growing up amongst cars I have learnt to appreciate, to know and to race with them. together with my father in 2017, 2018 and 2019 we won the Italian Historic Cars Championship, before with a BMW M3 E30 then with our dear 911 Carrera 2 Gruppo B (964).
Not only Porsche but all vintage cars and sports models have become my passion, from Abarth, to Alfa Romeo, Alpine-Renault, Bizzarrini, BMW, Lancia and Lotus just to name a few: unique items to find, to restore and to bring back to a new life. Each car is a challenge with its own history.
Starting to work in the automotive field, it was natural for me to combine my passion with my studies: cars, competitions and industrial design. This was how our consulting activity in the field of historical and sports cars was born, in the heart of the Motorvalley - Bologna - where many of the world's most famous companies were born: Maserati, Lamborghini, Abarth and OSCA.
We have named it "Gulf Blue", a tribute to our beloved 911 Carrera RS 2.7, color " Gulf Blue", which has been in our garage for 24 years. This car has been good mate and a great passion for my father and I: we have travelled, raced and had a lot of fun with it.
